The quest titled A Taste of Freedom in Divinity: Original Sin 2 presents players with an intriguing mix of environmental puzzles and moral choices. Located within the town of Driftwood, this side mission takes you deep into the hidden basement of Mordus' house. Navigating through its hidden chambers reveals ancient secrets, powerful boss encounters, and valuable loot rewards.

Starting the Quest in Mordus' Basement

To begin this quest, travel to Mordus' house in Driftwood and head down into the cellar. You will find an ornate skull on the wall that is missing one of its gemstone eyes. Placing the missing gem into the skull or using lockpicking tools will open a secret passage into a hidden crypt.

Inside the crypt, players encounter a pressure plate puzzle that guards the inner chamber. Using Spirit Vision reveals the correct pattern, which requires standing on specific plates or placing heavy objects like vases over them. Solving this room unlocks the doorway leading directly to the imprisoned creature.

Freeing the Imprisoned Lich

Inside the inner chamber, you will discover a bound creature known as the Desiccated Undead, who is actually an ancient Lich. Interacting with the control panel allows you to press buttons that release the creature from its chains. Freeing the Lich spawns several skeletal minions that initiate a tough battle alongside your temporary ally.

After defeating the undead waves, the Lich will speak with your party and express a desperate hunger. You are faced with a choice to either execute the monster immediately or allow it to escape and feed. Allowing it to leave leads to additional encounters further along Reaper's Coast.

Tracking the Lich across Reaper's Coast

If you spare the Lich, you can encounter it again feasting on corpses near Reaper's Bluffs or Cloisterwood. Meeting the creature at these locations presents additional choices regarding whether to offer Source or attack it. If permitted to recover fully, the creature retrieves its Soul Jar and rewards your patience with a hidden chest filled with treasure.

Alternatively, players can choose to fight and kill the Lich during any encounter to obtain immediate loot. Defeating the Lich drops unique equipment, including Xhaxh's Staff of Parasitic Decay. Balancing immediate battle rewards against long-term quest outcomes remains one of the most compelling aspects of this mission.
